What Mormons Really Believe

79

By Jyle Dupuis

Having been born and raised in the Mormon religion I am repeatedly asked what it is they really believe. Because I no longer associate myself with them I have no qualms writing all of the funny tidbits that make being a Mormon or “Latter-Day Saint” (LDS) as they are preferred to be called, amusing. They are unlike any other Christian religion out there and their focus on the family has attracted many followers. So before you join up read a few of the things you will have to believe if you want to become a Mormon.

I promise I am not making any of this up.

If you became a Mormon...

… you will be convinced that horses (mentioned in the Book of Mormon as having lived in the Americas) are actually deer.1

… you will believe that Native Americans are Israeli immigrants.2

… you will believe that drinking coffee will get you a one way ticket to hell.3

… you will deny the Mountain Meadows Massacre ever happened and if it did it was committed by a few guys who never deserved to be brought to justice.4

… you will believe that your blessed underwear will make you fireproof.5

… you might subscribe to the belief that Dinosaur bones are from distant galaxies that were brought together when Jesus made the earth 6,000 years ago.6

… you will believe that aliens from other planets are governed by other gods. And that you too can be a god and have your own universe.7

… you will freely give 10% of your income to help fund a church that has $30 Billion in assets.8

… you will believe that people who are gay are just individuals being tempted by the devil to commit sin.9

… you will believe that the Earth is under populated and that women need to have as many babies as possible.10

… you will secretly believe that polygamy should be practiced if only the laws could be changed.11

… you will secretly worship a god-mother who birthed all good and bad spirits.12

… you will believe that Cain still walks the Earth resembling the Sasquatch and and is the father of all Africans “a dark and cursed people”13

… you will believe that if you are black you can literally become white if you are righteous enough. You can also turn dark by being bad.14

… you will believe that Native Americans had swords made of copper long before steel was introduced by the Europeans.15

… you will believe that copper is strong enough to be made into a sword.16

… you will believe in communalism and long for the day when all Mormons will be gathered together to build a new city in Jackson County, Missouri called the New Jerusalem.17

I highly recommend for further information about Mormonism.

“The first commandment given to man was to multiply and replenish the earth with children. That commandment has never been altered, modified, or cancelled. The Lord did not say to multiply and replenish the earth if it is convenient, or if you are wealthy, or after you have gotten your schooling, or when there is peace on earth, or until you have four children. The Bible says, ‘Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: ... Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them. ...’ ( Ps. 127:3, 5.) We believe God is glorified by having numerous children and a program of perfection for them. So also will God glorify that husband and wife who have a large posterity and who have tried to raise them up in righteousness” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1969, 12).

"As I was riding along the road on my mule I suddenly noticed a very strange personage walking beside me... His head was about even with my shoulders as I sat in my saddle. He wore no clothing, but was covered with hair. His skin was very dark. I asked him where he dwelt and he replied that he had no home, that he was a wanderer in the earth and traveled to and fro. He said he was a very miserable creature, that he had earnestly sought death during his sojourn upon the earth, but that he could not die, and his mission was to destroy the souls of men." Well..let's see now...drinking coffee will get you to hell...my underwear will make me fireproof...Cain is Sasquatch...interesting, very interesting. (I'm having a chuckle here). I'm guessing Michael Jackson believed in being a mormon...he was a poor black child who became a white rich woman! (Sorry, I just couldn't resist!) lol And if horses are deer, then what are deer called? It's amazing what some people will believe in. The truth of the matter is there's only one way to Heaven and that is through Jesus. Let's hope they find Him before it's too late. Thanks for sharing this information.

Have a great day and God bless! :-)

As a member of the Church myself I can honestly say everything you claim Mormon's believe is false.

It would take a hub to point out your errors. I don't know who taught you but maybe you just heard it wrong.

No one will be condemned for drinking coffee.

Any sin weather it be stealing, lying, murder, gossiping or engaging in sexual acts with some one of the same sex is following satan not God.

Why couldn't copper swords hold up against other copper swords? By the way Nephi's bow was made of Steel, you need to read the Book of Mormon more closely.

Polygamy may be practiced when God changes the law, not man. Personally I don't know any male member who wants to practice polygamy again.

You ideas about Cain and Aliens and dinosaur bones are way off.

As for communal living this was practiced in the early church as recorded in acts.

Sounds like I've been challenged. I will provide footnotes today, so that you can reference these claims yourself.

I had a giggle at all of this. Being a christian, it floors me to read all these silly beliefs... who do they actually worship though?? Do they believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God ?? i wish a mormon would come out and tell us who really is their saviour...forget all the copper and deer nonsence. -its not relevant to faith anyway

Officially they "believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost." - Articles of Faith

For Mormon's they believe that they are separate persons who together represent the 'Godhead'.

They pray to Jesus but it is the Eternal Father who they ultimately worship.

I can only say from what I have read about Mormonism as far as History goes....the founder Joseph Smith, did in fact practice polygamy and had 35 wives. Several of which he took from their husbands in order to become his wives....so if you could maybe possibly justify polygamy from the Old Testament, which God never condoned in any way, you could never justify from either the Bible or the Book of Mormon a man taking other men's wives, yet that is just what Joseph Smith did. It is historically documented, so pretty hard to argue with.

You have given references on two subject I did not cover.

First off the church teaches that the horse's mentioned in The Book of Mormon were Horse's, not deer. Alma 18:9-12 clearly tells of Horse's being prepared for the King's chariots. Deer do not pull chariots.

2, The skin turning black was an outward symbol of their inner evil, just as their skin being lighted being symbolic of their inner righteousness.

HOWEVER, this was a specific place and time. Skin color has NOTHING to do with the inner soul of a man.

I believe the problem with horses in the Book of Mormon is there were no horses brought over to the Americas by the Spanish until the 1600s, which means something is wrong in the Book of Mormon unless they are deer?? I believe the Book of Mormon spans ~ 2500 BC to ~ 400 AD Deer and horses are hard to confuse though!

In the Book of Mormon, it states that there is ONE God and they are the Father, Son and Spirit. References include 2 Nephi 31:21 (And now behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end, Amen.)and Mosiah 15:4-5 (And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth. And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people)(Jesus) Alma 11:22-29; 38-44 - Now Zeemron said, Is there more than one God? And he answered "No". Now Zeemron saith again to him: Is the Son of God the very Eternal Father? And Amulek said unto him: Yea he is the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth and of all things which in them are. He is the beginning and the end, the first and the last).........shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God to be judged according to their works.....)

The Book of Mormon reads exactly like the King James version of the Bible. Why is that? There is no reason I can think of that there should have been any relationship between these two sets of writings. In my opinion, Joseph Smith was familiar with the King James and patterned his book after it in order to have more credibility. But, I think this gives it less credibility. It's not as if the language of the King James was common for this time and region. If the language itself is contrived, what else is contrived in this book?

In addition, there is no archaelogical or historical evidence of this civilization on which the Book of Mormon is based. Where did they go? The Bible itself has been passed down from generation to generation and has tons of 1st century manuscripts. In addition, we have secular writings that verify that these events took place. What Joseph Smith asks us to believe is that first century writings about Jesus of Nazareth (early copies of which we have in our possession) are much less authoritative while writings which we cannot verify from a Native American tribe we cannot prove exists are in fact valid and authoritative. Even the plates Joseph Smith said was the source for the translation that created the Book of Mormon is not in our possession (God apparently took them after the the Book of Mormon was completed). Old Testament scripture consistently validated the New Testament with prophecies that later were fulfilled by the New Testament. There is no writing whatsoever in either Testament that predicts the events documented in the Book of Mormon. It completely stands on it's own (like a three legged chair).

That's my opinion.

In Sunday School they would come up with all sorts of theories trying to prove that the Book of Mormon was factually based, horses actually being a deer is one theory that was prevalent. I cannot provide reference for this since Mormons don't like to keep records of outlandish claims. However, here is one by Robert R. Bennett of the "Neal A. Maxwell Institute" claiming that horses could have been mistaken for the Tapir. http://maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/publications/trans

It is a shame. It is doctrine of demons {Book of Mormans}Joseph Smith has decieved many with this false teaching and scripture says that outer darkness is reserved for these false teachers. Sounds like he took advantage of weak willed women. There were many who wrote simular things claiming it God inspired but like his book they were seen for the decieption they were.Jesus was God in the flesh. Worshiped as God by his disciples and me. I need no other Lord especially one who has laid the burden of religion as the Pharasees did which Jesus detested.Lord to these who have been led astray please give recovery of their sight [spiritual} and set these captives free.
